Q: So how do I address you guys?
A: Preferably 'mods'. Brett is your mod and sometimes Deli and Lauren helps him out.
Q: Why did you kill Batman and Alfred?! Why is Gordon gone?
A: Streets of Gotham was created with the intent of telling a story we rarely -- if ever -- get to see carried out in the comics in any detail. It’s also inspired by the themes of the Christopher Nolan films, which address Batman as an invention and urban legend, and we wish to see how it develops beyond Bruce Wayne. By removing three central characters, we can embrace the concept of legacy, the passing of the torch to new hands, and dive into uncharted territory with glee and suspense.
Q: Is this game set in the Nolan movie universe? Is it set in the comics? What is an AU (Alternate Universe) game?
A: While this game is inspired by Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises, it is not set firmly in the world created by those movies. Nor is it set in any prior version of the comics or cartoons. While we do borrow elements from each, we wish to create our own ‘version’, keeping all of the core elements and ideas in place while giving each player the freedom to define and invent original as well as reinvent canon characters. That is why we refer to Streets of Gotham as an Alternate Universe game. Other like-minded verses include (but not limited to) Heroes, The Cape, Misfits...
Q: Does the rest of the DC Universe exist?
A: Yes and no. There is a Metropolis, a Coast City, a Star City, et cetera. However we do not wish to incorporate the use of things like Superman, magic, Green Lanterns, aliens and supernatural forces. Any character from the DC universe that would fit in the ‘street-level’ story of the Gotham game is welcome, even one with reasonably grounded powers (Canary’s sonic scream or Clayface’s changing shapes, for instance). If it seems too fantastic for something set in Gotham City primarily, it’s not something we wish to touch on in the game as it stands right now.
Q: I want to apply for a canon character. Can I make changes to them?
A: Yes! We don’t mind hair color, race, codename or other changes at all. If they are drastic changes, we may still allow it, but we request you explain your reason for changing them. If the concept is solid and doesn't conflict with the needs of the game, we are likely to accept any changes you make, so long as the core character concept remains in place.
Q: I want to create an original character. What role can I choose to play them in, and how will they compare to canon characters?
A: We consider original characters to be on equal footing with canon characters in terms of importance and focus. We are far more likely to give preference to an active original character over a less-active canon one.
Q: I really want to play a character on the Unavailable page. Is there any way to make this happen?
A: This is subject to mod approval, but the most likely answer will be no, especially if this is to be your first character in the game. The NPCs on the main NPC page are vital to the game’s infrastructure, and while you might be able to use them in game, picking them up as a PC is not an option. Though... you might be able to supplant their roles with your own characters. Who knows, maybe your criminal will soon be running the Cosa Nostra or become acting District Attorney over Deacon Mays! And before anyone asks, we will never allow anyone to play Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth, or Commissioner Gordon, as their absence is central to the game’s concept.
Q: I want to use one of the game’s NPCs for plotting. What am I allowed to do and not do with the character?
A: You will most likely be given permission to use them, but not kill them, nor involve them in relationships with your character, and need special permission to injure or otherwise detain them. They are meant to be support characters, and more personal plots should be with other player characters. We may grant exceptions if the plotting purpose is strong, but those would be rare. Please contact a mod if you would like us to partner with you for a thread with any of them.
Q: Can I create my own NPCs?
A: Yes! We encourage it. Your character’s family and friends, colleagues and henchmen, are a vital part of their life. Whenever possible, we ask that you opt to plot with player characters, but a strong support cast of NPCs is never a bad thing to have. Any NPCs you create are your own to control. However, if they have become vital to a larger plot, some small restrictions may apply until the end of said plot. If you want to create an NPC with major influence, you will need mod approval.
Q: Streets of Gotham is all about grounded 'realism'. What if I want crack plots and silly threads?
A: You are free to do so to a point. We don’t mind silliness or crack as long as it doesn't undermine the game’s general tone and setting. We encourage silliness to lighten the mood. RP is all about entertainment, after all. But there's a reason Bat-Mite is on the Unavailable page.
Q: My question isn't here!
A: That isn't a question. :D Please drop box the mods or email the mods.
